WTF is Inbox Placement?
Whether your email actually lands in the inbox, the spam folder, or somewhere in between. Delivery rate doesn't tell you this.
The real explanation
Inbox placement is the metric that tells you where your email ended up after it was accepted by the receiving server. This is completely different from delivery rate. "Delivered" just means the server accepted the message. It says nothing about whether it went to the inbox, spam, promotions tab, or a custom filter. You can have a 99% delivery rate and 40% inbox placement.
The hard truth: most ESPs don't show you inbox placement because they can't measure it directly. What they call "deliverability" in their dashboards is almost always delivery rate. To actually measure inbox placement, you need seed-based testing tools that maintain test addresses at major mailbox providers and check where your email lands.
Inbox placement varies by mailbox provider, by recipient, and by send. Someone who always opens your emails might see you in the inbox while a less-engaged subscriber at the same provider sees you in spam. It's not a single number. It's a constantly shifting landscape.
Show me an example
Your ESP dashboard shows 98.5% delivery rate. You celebrate. But you run a seed test and discover that 35% of your Gmail recipients are seeing your emails in the Promotions tab, and 12% at Outlook are going straight to Junk. Your actual inbox placement is closer to 70%. The "98.5% delivered" number was technically true and practically useless.
